Pastoral Council Minutes - May 18th, 2021
Present: Jeff Keen, Phil Paladino, Ruth Schluter, Father Doug Wathier, Wayne Green
Zoom: Kris Dunkin, Kelly Flege, Elaine Lawler, Trent Lockard, Jenne Seward
Not present: Jennifer Siech 
  • Meeting called to order by Trent
  • Father Doug started with “Come Holy Spirit” prayer.
  • The April 20th minutes were reviewed. Kelly moved to accept the minutes, Elaine seconded, and the Council approved.
  • Phase 2 Committee Update: Requests for Proposals were submitted to various Architects and Capital Campaign Groups. Waiting to hear back from them. 
  • Peace and Justice committee submitted the following tithe recommendations.
Local: $500 to Waverly Veteran’s Homeless Shelter
State/National: $500 to Retrieving Freedom
$500 to Feeding America
$500 to Guiding Star
International: $1,000 to Caritas
Question on Guiding Start and Caritas. Guiding Star provides natural, pro-woman, and pro-family health and wellness care following Catholic doctrine.Caritas could be considered a Catholic Red Cross.
After discussion, Ruth made a motion to approve the tithe recommendations, seconded by Jeff, and approved by council.
  • Nominees for Pastoral Council
    • A couple of volunteers so far
    • A list of potential candidates will be contacted
    • Ballot will be an insert in bulletin
  • Covid concerns
    • Archdiocese set June 5th as ending date for dispensation from Mass and the day mandates are being lifted
    • Local parishes still have some leeway in decisions
    • Staff is working on rules and will be communicating them in a mailing
    • Services will still be available online for the time being
    • Also will be working on plan for homebound ministry and Liturgies in nursing homes
  • Finance Committee review by Kelli
    • Offertory trending up
    • Received an IRA gift of $10,000
    • Projecting a $75,000 budget surplus, which includes the $54,000 PPP loan forgiveness and some extra Building and Grounds expenses
  • Executive session – staff bonus
    • Recommendation to give each staff member $500 payment, total  $2,500 expense
    • It will be considered regular pay
    • Jenne made a motion to approve this payment, seconded by Ruth, and approved by Council.
  • Wayne gave Faith Formation report
    • Sessions have ended for the year and Angie receive some good feedback from parents.
    • NCYC fundraising continues and is going well.
    • Totus Tuus is June 13th thru 18th.
    • St. Mary may partner with St. Paul on vacation bible school if St. Paul decides to go ahead. They will be making their decision later this month or early June. If they decide to not have VBS then we will not either.
    • Discipleship Coordinator position
      • Two Zoom interviews so far
      • One of the candidates visited St. Mary on May 11th and was offered the position but decided to take a position in Des Moines.
      • Another zoom interview May 18th.
  • Discussion on the potential of doing solar with building expansion. The suggestion will be presented to the architects.
  • Jeff made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Wayne, and approved by Council.
  • Father ended the meeting with the Hail Mary.
  • Next Council meeting will be Tuesday, August May 17th at 7:00pm

Finance Council – Aug 17, 2021
Present: Kelly Flege, Scott Danner, Becky Wilson, Joe Barber, Becky David, Scott Danner, Fr Doug Wathier. Also present: Deacon Phil Paladino, Dixie Jacobs.
Election of Officers: Becky D. made a motion to nominate Joe Barber as chair and Steve Phyfe as vice. They accepted the nomination, and Becky W. seconded the motion. They were elected with unanimous vote.
Monthly Financials: Offertory is well for summer, when giving is slightly down. The increase in online giving has helped reduce the seasonal peaks and decline in offering through the year (update note: 45% of Aug offertory gifts were from online giving). The 2nd Payroll Protection Program (PPP) forgiven loan $54,000 was deposited in savings. No extraordinary expenditures to report.
Phase 2 Update: Bray Architecture and Mark Davy & Associates (fundraising) were hired. A feasibility study will begin this fall-early winter.
Staff Update: Dan Holland has been hired full-time as Coordinator of Discipleship for High School, RCIA and Young Adults.
Financial Letter: A draft letter will be sent out with mid-year contribution statement with a thank you to parishioners for their support and a short update on the phase 2 project.
Bequest: The church received a bequest from a parishioner of their entire estate. Joe and Steve will meet with the executor to walk through the property.
Sept 21 Meeting: agenda – monthly financials, phase 2 building update, bequest update, faith formation update. Becky D. will not be able to attend the Sept meeting. Meeting adjourned.
