The mission of the Peace and Justice Committee:
to mobilize the St. Mary community
to care for the poor and marginalized
in the name of Jesus
through the lens of our Catholic faith.
The Peace and Justice Committee is on the move!Peace and justice concerns in our world are the responsibility of all. Horrific injustices exist around the world: wars, drugs, human trafficking, racial discrimination, and an increase of poor and hopeless people. As a parish community, we strive to build bridges between the social ministry of our parish and other parish ministries such as worship, faith formation, evangelization, and pastoral care.

St. Mary Lenten Project 2026! Sister Water Project Dubuque, IA
This Lenten season St. Mary parish will be raising money towards a well for the Sister Water Project. Each well costs $5,000.00. The average cost of a well comes down to less than ten dollars per person served by that well. The Dubuque Franciscan Sisters launched the Sister Water Project in 2006 to bring safe water to villagers in Tanzania and Honduras. Months were spent studying, discussing and praying about global water issues to fulfill the sisters mission statement of, “living in right relationship with all of creation.” |
Since that time, the Sister Water Project has completed over 500 well projects in Tanzania and 50 water systems in Honduras. According to World Vision 2023, 1 in 10 people in the world do not have access to clean water. Providing clean water makes a significant impact on the lives of people in Honduras and Tanzania. Along with improved health, having access to clean, nearby water sources empowers women and children to improve their future economic and educational opportunities.
