The mission of St Mary Parish is to make Christ real in our community by living the Gospel, worshiping together and serving others. When listening to the first reading this weekend, it pretty well sums up what many of the different ministries at St Mary Parish are all about. Isaiah said share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless, clothe the naked when you see them. Your light shall break forth like the dawn.
In 2005, we started our capital campaign to build our new facility. I had shared a message at the Masses one weekend in October that year, which God had asked me to share. This church needs to be built and you need to tell the people about it. Little did we know that just two and a half years later we would be dealing with a 500- year flood damaging our previous facilities. We were called to action and our new parish home was built allowing our move in Nov 2008.
This building has given us the opportunity to better serve those we minister to. It has also allowed those who want to minister the ability to serve. As this journey began, we took on 1.2 million in debt. Each weekend our staff updated us on how we were doing paying off our loan. We did very well with a goal to have that debt paid in 10 years.
This last August, as I noticed the balance approaching ten thousand, it was clear we were nearing the end of that debt. Then I had one of those sleepless nights when a message came to me again. Someone was going to come forward and write a check for the balance. I shared this with Fr Dave at lunch the next day and wouldn’t you know it three days later that is exactly what happened - two years ahead of schedule. The people of St Mary Church let their light shine10 years ago as they stepped forward in faith to see the new parish home become a reality; and today we are each called to action. Our light to the world, sharing our faith, must continue to burn bright.
