Most of us feel confident in certain areas in our life; whether it is cooking, farming, business, engineering, music, mechanics, sports, medicine or many other areas.
In today’s Gospel, Simon Peter, James and John were professional fishermen, yet they had fished all night and caught nothing. Jesus came along and advised them to put out into the deep and let down their nets. I’m sure they thought they knew a lot more about fishing than Jesus - yet they obeyed and caught a record catch of fish.
In 1989, my husband and I were scheduled to move when the doctor (cardiologist) advised my husband that he needed emergency quadruple by-pass surgery on his heart. It was a hectic time.
We owned two duplexes each having three keys (front door, back door, and garage) for a total of twelve different keys. I was determined to put them in a special place so they wouldn’t be lost in a sea of boxes. A month later, new renters reported they didn’t have a garage key. I started searching for the twelve keys. No matter where I looked they couldn’t be found.
Three months later, the renters were still waiting for the key. I was very frustrated and shared the problem with my prayer group. An older woman in the group responded that all I had to do was pray around the house and the Lord would tell me. I would be seeing the same woman the next night and knew she would ask me where I found the keys.
So I set out praying as I was doing my house work. In less than ten minutes, the words came to me, “Look under the seat of your little red car. Sure enough there they were. I had been sitting on them for three months. If I had not sought his guidance, I might have sold the car with the keys still under the seat.
Even though Simon and his buddies thought they knew more about fishing, Jesus knew a lot more than they did. I thought I could handle the problem on my own, but I couldn’t.
Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all of your heart.” Also, Hebrew 11:6 says, “For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
No matter what the situation is, He knows the best way.
