The Way of the Disciple...
Hi all! I am Yvette Andersen, soon to be Yvette Schwickerath, and I am your new 5-12th (grade) Coordinator of Youth Formation. I come to you from Aplington, Ia, where church was just as much a home as my house. At a young age, I felt that God was calling me to teach others about Christ and live a life of service. So, after graduating from A-P High, Loras College seemed to be a great next step. After college, I moved to New Hampton, where I was the Director and Youth Minister at Saint John School of Religion for a year. God then led me to Saint Patrick Parish in Cedar Falls to be their Youth Minister for the past three years. Now God has called me here and I think He has a lot in store for this upcoming year; from Megan & I joining the staff, to me getting married in October and Saint Mary’s sending their first group of people to Catholic Heart Workcamp (CHWC).
This past week, I had the privilege to join three teens from Saint Mary and 330 other campers in Ashland, Montana at CHWC, where we served the Northern Cheyenne and Crow people. Our camp was broken up into 40 work groups that were each sent out to do different work projects. Projects included painting inside and outside, building wheelchair ramps, insulating homes, redoing drywall, yard work and volunteering at the boys and girls club. Later you will hear from Peyton, Elizabeth, Cade & myself in more detail about our work projects. At camp, we do more than just work. We attend daily Mass, participate in Eucharistic Adoration, have the chance to go to reconciliation, eat plenty of food and have a lot of fun. But most importantly we are called to be change and to amplify our faith daily.
In our second reading this weekend, Saint Paul says, “I urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” At CHWC, we were called to amplify our faith, to work and pray and to daily say, “Here I am Lord, send me.” I want to thank the parish for sending us on CHWC, we worked hard and met God. I pray that we never forget the experience we had, the people we served and the faith we shared. I hope that we can return to Catholic Heart Workcamp next year and maybe even bring a few more people.
