Finance Council Meeting, Jan. 19, 2015 (no meeting Dec 2015):
Attendees: Michele Stevens, Chuck Mashek, Tom Singewald, Janine Roberts, Chris Holthaus, Fr David Schatz. Also present: Dixie Jacobs.
Minutes were reviewed and accepted as written.
Monthly Financials: The committee discussed how to report the offertory giving in the bulletin. It is currently the total offertory budget divided by 52 weeks. This does not allow for the spike in giving seen in December from parishioners who donate once per year or the lower giving experienced during the summer. This is difficult for parishioners to understand when the offertory total jumps by $30,000 or more in December due to the once-a-year gifts. Several options were discussed, but a better method was not determined. It was decided to leave the reporting as is for now. Offertory continues to be above budget and almost $6000 above last year’s giving. No extraordinary expenditures were reported. We took a $25,000 withdrawal from savings to meet expenses in the fall. It is expected to return this to savings, if giving continues on its current level.
LED Lights: Duane Schwickerath, building and grounds manager, researched replacing 87 florescent fixtures with LED fixtures. He provided the following information: The current fixtures are 150 watts; the LED fixtures are 50 watts. The areas are: office 35, kitchen 11, (2) classrooms 16, reconciliation/sacristy 6, N/S Hall 7, mechanical room 3, restrooms 9
Total cost $9,026 after a $2,610 rebate. The city estimated $3200/year savings in electricity. Dixie presented the information, but reported that she could not come close to this savings using several different energy calculators. She asked to table this discussion until she could verify the information given to her.
Salary Budget 2016/17: This was tabled until Feb.
Minimum Recommendation for General Savings: It was discussed whether the finance council should set a minimum to retain in general savings. Withdrawals from savings have been used the past few years to meet the operating budget. The loan will be paid off within the calendar year, which will provide the potential for rebuilding savings. The council decided to table further discussion on savings until the loan is paid off.
Feb Agenda: LED lights update, budget 2016/17 salary packages
